“Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head… Follow me.” [Luke 9:58]
Jesus’ words can surprise and even offend us at times. After someone made this declarative statement to Jesus, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus remarked, “But the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” I hear in his words a deeper challenge. I hear Jesus saying, “Are you sure, really sure you want to follow me? It’s not going to be easy. I don’t own property. I don’t have any place I call my own. I am basically a vagabond going from place to place. Are you willing to sacrifice the trappings of success for me?” In the translation I most often read, this section of scripture bears this title, “Would Be Followers of Jesus.” It seems Jesus is trying to make a point. To follow means it is going to cost you something. To follow may involve some risks. To follow may compromise your comfort and security. Are you sure you want to follow? Choosing to follow Jesus is a daily decision, not “a once and done,” as they say. And choosing to follow will cost us along the way. Are you ready to pay the price?
Jesus, your words at times startle and overwhelm me. Yet, I know you are testing the sincerity of my commitment. Does my yes really mean yes? Am I really willing to follow you even if it costs me? Help me to trust in your provision as I chose daily to follow your lead. Amen.
