“Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray always and not to lose heart.” [Luke 18:1]
Do you ever get discouraged? Have you ever been ready to give up, because you don’t feel like you are getting anywhere? If you have, then you are not alone. It is difficult not to lose heart in the midst of difficult circumstances or when problems continually pile up. Jesus knew what the disciples were about to face, for he had turned towards Jerusalem and the cross. Jesus knew that the disciples needed to be spiritually equipped for their future. So, Jesus said to them, “Pray always and [do] not lose heart.” Yet, how does one pray always or as Paul says in another passage, “Pray without ceasing”? The parable Jesus tells his disciples, reminds us that God’s steadfastness is what makes this possible. God will see us through anything and everything. The question of this text is whether or not we will trust God to hear and respond to our prayers. If we rely only on ourselves, we will lose heart. But, if we rely on God, God will see us through whatever befalls us.
Listening God, thank you for your steadfastness. Give me the courage to not lose heart, as I trust in your ability to hear and respond to my heart cries. Continually awaken my spirit to your promise, “I am with you always.” Amen.
