Never Stop Trying

“The wolf and the lamb shall feed together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox; but the serpent—its food shall be dust! They shall not hurt or destroy on all my holy mountain, says the Lord.” [Isaiah 65:25]

Do you remember the words of Mary the mother of Jesus in the opening chapter of the Gospel of Luke? “God has brought down the powerful from their thrones, and lifted up the lowly; God has filled the hungry with good things, and sent the rich away empty.” Jesus ushered in an upside down inside out new creation among us. A new reign where wolves and lambs graze together and no one will hurt or destroy on the holy mountain or anywhere else. This beautiful image of the way the world is supposed to be is far from what is. Wolves still devour lambs. The powerful still reign, while the lowly suffer hunger and so much more.  Will we ever live into this dream for humanity and all of creation? Is it even possible?  I suggest that we can never stop trying, even if we only impact one precious life at a time. How might you work towards taming wolves or filling the hungry with good things?

Lovingly patient God, thank you for never giving up on me. I confess that I often wield what power I have over others. I satisfy my own needs, while being oblivious to those who suffer around me. Give me the courage to remember and enact through my words and actions this peaceable vision you have for all of creation. Amen.
