“The law… the decrees… the precepts… the commandment… the ordinances… More to be desired are they then gold, even much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.” [Psalm 19:10]
Have you ever watched a bunch of four and five year old children attempt to play soccer? I call soccer at this age swarm ball, because all the children swarm around the ball. Of course, the two goalies are at opposite ends often picking flowers or looking skyward. And until the children learn the rules and who is allowed to be where at any given time, the game really is just chaos. Can you image trying to play any sport or game without rules. Imagine the chaos and disagreements that would arise as the game tries to progress. Rules are actually necessary and so are God’s laws, which help us sort through the chaos of our world by giving us appropriate boundaries that benefit the entire human team. The psalmist even says that God’s law is more to be desired than gold and is sweeter than the drippings of honeycomb. How do you experience God’s law? Is it worth more than gold to you?
Loving God, at times I rebel against your law and think I know better. Help me to realize that your ways are better than my ways, not only for me but for those I love and for all of humanity. Give me a desire to follow your ways all the days of my life. Amen.
