“The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him; but Jesus sent him away, saying, ‘Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.’” [Luke 8:38-39]
Healed and whole the man just wanted to be with Jesus. To travel with Jesus. To experience the transformation of others by Jesus. Who wouldn’t want to be in Jesus’ entourage? Yet, Jesus said to the man, “return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” I can see the bubble above the man’s head, “Return home? That’s no fun! They probably won’t even accept me!” I wonder, are you willing to declare to others how much God has done for you? Are you able to articulate the movement of the Spirit in your own life? I can speak for myself, that my Presbyterian upbringing did not equip me to do this very well. Yet, I was fortunate, because in junior high I met a friend who naturally shared how God was at work in her life. She helped me learn how to share the stirrings of God in my life with others. She helped me understand that no one can discredit my story and that my story has the potential to draw others to the healing and wholeness God offers. Sure, it’s great to hang out with Jesus, but Jesus will always send us home. Are you ready to be sent?
Sending God, I prefer being with you rather than being sent. You love me just as I am, so I do not fear rejection. But, you send me home. You send me to where I need to share my story. Give me the courage to declare how much you have done in my life with others. Amen.
