“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so
that you may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13
What fills you with hope? Is it the wonder of a newborn infant? Is it the beauty of a stunning sunset? Is it a lyrical melody that touches you deeply? Is it the embrace of one you love? Is it a community of friends that welcomes you as you are? Is it the symbol of an empty cross-lifted high? Apostle Paul says to the church in Rome, “May the God of hope fill you.” Yet, our world fills the airwaves with sights and sounds of despair. Devastation from the realities of war and super storms enters our living rooms. The rhetoric of divisiveness and hate blares loudly. Despair seems to be everywhere. That is why we need to hear anew Apostle Paul’s words; “May the God of hope fill you… may you abound in hope by the power of Holy Spirit.” The work of Christmas is to bring God’s hope into the shadowlands of our world.
Prayer
God of hope, I confess that despair easily creeps into my soul. God of hope, fill me with all joy and peace in believing, so that I may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. God of
hope, give me the courage to bear your hope into the shadowlands of this world. Amen
